Are You a Pig or a Chicken?

Well, are you a Pig or a Chicken! What a question to ask someone. This is one way of saying do you support this country, or does the country support you. This statement refers to the relationship that a person has with their country and community. The “Pig” represents dedication to something, while the Chicken represents involvement to something. One way to understand it, compare it to ham and eggs, the pig is dedicated to it, while the chicken is just involved with it. Yes, you can use other examples, but this is how it was taught to me. The American people are becoming more and more like the Chicken than the Pig. It seems that more and more American people are using the system “rules and laws” to give them a free ride in this country. What people do not seem to relate to or understand, is that the citizens of a country are like a piston in an engine. When a piston does not do its fair share and is getting a free ride, it puts a bigger load on the other pistons to do the same work output. Being dedicated to something is the same thing as saying “I pledge allegiance” to something. It means that it comes first and you second, this is what the pig represents. Me first and you second is the way the American people (chicken) think now.

This problem exists everywhere in our country from our leaders in congress, to governors, business, schools, cities and states to everyday people. There is no one person or group to blame, it is the whole system that has been used and abused over time and now it is a accepted way of doing things. This is sad, because all the people that have put their time and sweat into this country to get this country where it is today will be lost. It seems the attitude of the American people has changed from a “We and Us” to an “I and Me”.

I still believe in this country and what it can be, but each day that we don’t change the way we do things, we will get to a point and the country will be lost. To me, this country has too many chiefs in the kitchen and the soup is being boiled dry. We need to change the way this country is ran at all levels and need to set some goals, objectives and direction. This will take years and generations to fix this country, but if we want to pass this country to our next generation, we better start looking in the mirror to see what we are, the pig or a chicken. It is your choice, but your kid’s future.
